Traditional And Contemporary Martial Arts In Sarawak As A Tool Of Unity Through Shared Tradition

KUCHING – Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will conduct its fifth webinar, a series from Things That Bind Us (TTBU) project this Saturday, 10th September 2022, titled The Revival of Martial Arts; From Traditional to Contemporary Self-Defense. In this upcoming webinar episode, YPS has invited Mr Muhammad Khawar Hezazy bin Haji Uthman, Executive Secretary of Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Sarawak, and Mr Yu Kok Lee, founder of Sarawak Martial Arts Taekwondo, to speak about self-defense arts and their relationship to Sarawak’s unity and harmony. Miss Dana Yu Ping Sing, a Taekwondo instructor from Sarawak Martial Arts Taekwondo, will moderate the webinar.
This webinar will look into various strategies for reviving and strengthening Sarawak’s timeless martial arts traditions, particularly among younger generations, as well as understand the challenges of reviving Sarawak’s traditional martial arts, and also highlight its shared characteristics while cultivating Sarawakian unity through our shared history, culture, and traditions. Apart from self-defense, it is the most sought-after sport, particularly in Sarawak.

The youth in Sarawak expressed an interest in learning and revitalising traditional martial arts. The distinct element of traditional martial arts becomes an important component of Sarawak’s unity and social integration. Martial arts have become a platform for Sarawakians to unite and commemorate togetherness, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or faith. Attendees will learn more about the revival of martial arts in Sarawak during this webinar session. Interested participants should register by Friday at bit.ly/ttbumartialarts. The webinar is open to the general public.

The next webinar will focus on Sarawak’s fisheries. This year, there will be a total of six webinars on various topics to look forward to. Keep an eye out on YPS’ social media pages for the registration link for the upcoming sessions.
